My favourite place on Earth

Favourite place is to the right of the picture, right about where the sea meets the rocks

I think we all have a favourite place on Earth. This can range from the tip top of Mount Everest to the comfort of your own bed (a close second for me I must say). My favourite place is actually somewhere that most people might think mundane and monotonous. But in reality it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been (on a good day).

The place in question is a quaint little town called Elie on the Estuary of the River Forth in Fife, Scotland, and is actually opposite a little place you may have heard of called Edinburgh. At night you can actually see the lights of the Edinburgh Castle glimmering across the bay. So you may be wondering why a quaint little town in Scotland is my favourite place in the world, and that's understandable; there are certainly more exciting places to visit such as New York City, The Amazon Rainforest or Gloucestershire, but I have a long list of reasons why this place in particular is absolutely epic. I won't give you the full list as I guarantee that you will get bored, but here is short list of reasons as to why I have a favourite place on this planet.

First off, it's familiar. This is not applicable to everyone who goes there, obviously, but for me it's a second home. I've been going there with my family since I was about as tall as a blade of grass and looking more akin to the Michelin Man. Going there every October half term has let me know the ins and outs of this town and the view looking out to sea is one I associate with holidays, family and not having to worry about the never-ending pressure of school life and the future...(help). This feeling of relaxation and relief from stress is also helped by the weather. In the summer its actually surprisingly warm (for Scotland) and in October the air is cold but fresh. Around this time of year it is perfect weather to wear your big winter coat and scarf and feel warm and snug against the cold sea air that is actually really refreshing. Particularly when walking along the rocky outcrops, the wind can batter you as it is coming straight from the North Sea which can be exhilarating and fun to take some wacky photos of your hair trying to attempt a Mexican Wave.

Another reason I love this place is because of the views. On a sunny day you can see for miles across the bay towards Edinburgh and the Isle of May is clearly visible. The sand is a beautiful mix of oranges and reds and shells litter the shore which I have a stash of in my bedroom. The sea can range from a calm millpond that laps at the sand to a raging torrent that batters at the sea walls which is a sight to behold and also a teensy bit terrifying on occasion.

All this excitement certainly necessitates a visit to the local pub: The Ship Inn. A charming pub located on the sea front, The Ship Inn offers a wide-ranging menu from pub meals to fine dining with a speciality for seafood and killer steaks. The atmosphere is one that you would expect from a local pub which is graced most evenings by the town's locals out to enjoy a pint.

But I do have a PARTICULAR favourite place on Earth besides the town itself. In the picture above, there is the lighthouse of Elie. Every day we were in Elie we would walk to the lighthouse and look out to sea. At either low or high tide there is a drop at the edge of the rocks of about 20 metres where the sea churns and batters the rocks. There is nothing to stop a strong wind from hitting your body and blowing away the cobwebs. This is my favourite place one Earth; staring out to sea on a bright evening with the wind in my hair, the sea out in front of me and Elie behind me looking very picturesque in the setting sun.

I think it's great to have a favourite place on Earth and I hope that you do too. Having somewhere you can feel totally relaxed and at ease can make you happy, even for just a short while. If you don't have a favourite place, go out and find one! The only way you can call somewhere home is to first find a house.

...I appreciate that that is a very cheesy line but you get the idea.
